Avalanche warning for region Svalbard øst Wednesday 13.05.2020

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Strong wind and snow will lead to a large amount of wind transported snow. Avoid all avalanche terrain. Naturally triggered avalanches likely.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

25 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong gale from east, changing to gale from the southeast during the evening. -10 °C to -6 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Varselet er basert på et enklere datagrunnlag enn regionale varsler og utgis kun for faregrad 4 og 5.

Sterk vind og stort snøfall vil fortsette å legge opp fokksnø i mange heng. Skred kan løsne naturlig og bli store. Endret vindretning medfører utbredelse av skredproblemet i flere himmelretninger.

Mest utsatt er Ny-Friesland, Olav V land , Edgeøya og Barentsøya.

Vær oppmerksom på at det kan ha utviklet seg nye vedvarende svake lag den siste uka, som gjør at de ferske nysnøflakene blir svært ustabile. Stor pålagring eller skred i den ferske fokksnøen kan også utløse skred i dypere gamle vedvarende svake lag og gi større skred.
